Overview of Handwriting

Handwriting is an important component of literacy and a functional life skill. One of the many factors that contributes to successful handwriting is the ability to write letters and numbers automatically without thinking how do it each time. Research has shown when letter formations become automatic, children are able to focus on the content of sentences such as developing ideas and vocabulary selection.  CubWorks™ is a handwriting program that uses research based instructional strategies to enhance automatic letter formation, in addition to other essential handwriting components. Children are better able to remember formation sequences because they can relate to the stories and visualize the common objects used in the program, thereby promoting automatic handwriting.

Letter & Number Groups

The Cubworks ™ handwriting program structures learning with letters & number groups. Examples of the Lower Case Letter Groups; Cloud Letters, Joey Letters & Puppy Letters, are shown below.

The groups were developed based on the following features:

Kinesthetic Likeness

Letters & numbers in the same group build on the
same initial motor movement.

Picture & Story Likeness

Letters & numbers in the same group
share a picture & story component.
i.e., Cloud letters use the word “cloud”
as a part of every story & as a visual cue for each letter in that group.

Identical Starting Points

Letters & numbers in same group share the same starting point within a square. These reference points help
with visualization when pictures
are removed.

Benefits of CubWorks™ Handwriting Program

Multi-sensory VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic & Tactile) Method
Research suggests multi-sensory methods engages many different areas of the brain which enhances the ability to learn (encode) and remember (recall) information critical for handwriting to become an automatic process. i.e., write letter “c” without thinking about how to do it.

Mnemonic Strategies
Mnemonics are memory enhancing devices such as “Spring Forward, Fall Back” and "Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosy”. The pictures, stories, sky, grass, dirt colors, and squares are examples of the mnemonic strategies in this program.

CubClub©
Unique, internet based tool promoting the development of handwriting “building blocks” such as fine motor skills, while addressing letter & number formations simultaneously.

Explicit Instruction
Highly structured lessons that state the purpose for learning, provide multiple demonstrations, detailed verbal guidance and hands on learning.

Active Learning
Lessons include verbal responses and verbal rehearsal from students multiple times.

Uniform Terms
Educators, parents, therapists, etc., all use the same verbage when teaching letter and number formations.
Letter “c” will always be “start at the dot, go up to the cloud, pick an apple, put it in the basket”, regardless of who is working with the child.

Curriculum Continuity
Students with and without special needs are able to use the same program.

Multidisciplinary
Program used by a variety of individuals such as teachers, therapists, caregivers, etc.
